Garrett County’s Most Famous Rock: Howard
Garrett County's most famous rock is an unassuming rock that has been named Howard. Rumor has it that in 1802, during the great rock shortage, he was brought here to be made in to smaller rocks. Luckily, before he was made into several smaller rocks, it was acknowledged that the “great rock shortage of 1802” was a hoax concocted by “big rock” to generate revenue for the stone barons of the early 1800's.
Howard's early existence is largely unknown. It was originally thought he was very gneiss, but it later turned out he was more sedimentary. His age is unknown, but we do know he existed long before humans walked the earth, yet formed after the earth came in to existence. The exact date is unknown.
Since he has been in Garrett County, there have been several rumors of his historical significance. One account tells of him winning a battle in the civil war simply by smashing a pair of critical scissors. Luckily, paper was not used in that battle.
Another rumor is that while passing through Little Crossings, George Washington took a nap on Howard. In fact, it was his best nap ever taken.
Currently Howard is passing his time in the center of Spruce Forest Artisan Village. Often, he can be taken for granite, but do not be tricked, he is strictly sedimentary. If you stand nearby him you may find yourself stuck between a rock and a selfie place. It is said that if you tell him a wish, it could come true. But it also might not come true. But if it does, it is certainly because Howard made it so! He is just that kind of rock!
