Ornament-making

Saturday, Nov 19

$40

A Christmas ornament-making workshop will be offered on Saturday November 19 from 9:30-12:30. Fired ornaments will be ready for pick up on December 1. In this workshop the instructor will demonstrate a number of decorative forms, as well as simple sculpting techniques that will allow students to design their own ornaments. “We will use an iron-rich clay (read “it can stain”) that is non-toxic and fires to a brick orange color,” says instructor Natalie Atherton, who holds a Master of Fine Arts in ceramic sculpture and has been teaching ceramics on and off for 15 years. The class is open to adults, and to children accompanied by an adult. Space is limited, so pre-registration is required. The cost is $40 per person and $10 for additional family members. Basic Techniques of Quilling

Quilling, also known as paper filigree was thought to have originated with the invention of paper in China in the first century AD. It spread to Europe over 500 years ago where the colorful curled designs were used by nuns to decorate religious texts. Here in the U.S. examples of quilling are found in Colonial era museums, such as those in Williamsburg, VA. In Reita’s class, which will be offered Wednesday October 12 from 9:30 to 3:30, students will learn basic techniques of quilling and complete one project. Questions about this workshop should be directed to Reita Marks at 304-599-1746.
