November 8-14 2010 OLD CHURCH AT SPRUCE FOREST GETS A FACELIFT
Taking
advantage of the unseasonably mild weather this past week, Mark
Griffin of QP Builders, Inc., were hard at work “sprucing up” the
historic church building in Grantsville that sits behind Penn Alps
Restaurant and Spruce Forest Artisan Village. Built around the turn
of the twentieth century, it served as the Pleasant Valley Methodist
Church for 92 years. In 1995 it was slated for demolition but was
saved by the combined efforts of parishioners and the late Dr. Alta
Schrock. In the spring of 1995 it was relocated its current site and
has been used as both a venue for weddings and for special events
such as music concerts and exhibitions. However, the pitiless winter
weather of Garrett County, combined with a lack of funds in recent
years, led to severe deterioration of the exterior of this lovely
wooden structure. Now this historic church is receiving a fresh coat
of paint and some much needed attention, thanks to a partnership
between Penn Alps (the building’s owner), the non-profit Spruce
Forest Artisan Village and caring community members.
